Tesla has begun sourcing components from Chinese suppliers for its Optimus humanoid robots manufactured in the United States.

As the world’s largest manufacturing hub for humanoid robots, China’s robust component supply chain will help Tesla speed up production ramp-up of Optimus at its Fremont factory in California.

In mid-September 2026, Tesla’s robotics division kicked off factory audits at three automotive component suppliers based in Ningbo, a major port city in eastern China. The three suppliers are Joyson Electronics, Tuopu Group and Sanhua Automotive.

Prior to the audits, the three firms had already received component orders for Tesla’s humanoid robot project, including joint modules, actuators and precision structural parts. Mass production of these robot parts will start once the suppliers pass audits covering production line performance, regulatory compliance and relevant industry standards.

During this trip to eastern China, Tesla’s robotics team also visited relevant enterprises in Hangzhou, Shanghai and other cities across the region.

Back in January this year, Tesla announced it would discontinue production of its high-end Model S sedan and Model X crossover, repurposing factory space at the California plant to build assembly lines for the Optimus humanoid robot. Tesla launched trial production of Optimus last year. The new procurement push from Chinese suppliers further highlights China’s strong influence in the global robotics sector — combining advanced technology and competitive cost advantages.

According to the 2026 Top 100 Global Auto Suppliers list published by Automotive News, ranked by OEM original equipment sales, Joyson Electronics took the 29th spot, Tuopu Group ranked 57th, and Sanhua Automotive was placed 100th.

All three companies are existing component suppliers for Tesla electric vehicles. They also serve leading humanoid robot developers including Agibot and Unitree Robotics.
